Abstract

In the preceding chapter I argued that such designations as light and good and bad are relative. Now, the concept of “civilization and enlightenment” (bunmei kaika) is also a relative one. When we are talking about civilization in the world today, the nations of Europe and the United States of America are the most highly civilized, while the Asian countries, such as Turkey, China, and Japan, may be called semi-developed countries, and Africa and Australia are to be counted as still primitive lands.
