The oil industry played a major role in the development of the modern United States. The sector propelled the U.S. economy, drove economic innovation and development, and created vast wealth for some Americans. It further helped make the country a world power. However, the industry also served as a cautionary tale about the challenges of economic consolidation, boom-and-bust cycles, and monopolization, and the potential problems associated with resource extraction, sustainability, and pollution. By the early 2000s, controversies over the continuing legacy of the oil industry contributed to growing polarization in the United States and undermined efforts to develop a coherent and long-term energy strategy.
