Abstract

The spectacular hit-and-run attacks which our fliers are staging every day over many wide fronts—the reminder to the Japs that their beloved Tokyo is not beyond our reach even if their ancestors and their sun goddesses are on guard – would have been impossible but for petroleum. An oilless war, had there been a war, would have been pretty dull business compared with the well-lubricated maneuverings of millions of men, not only on the ground, but on the surface of the waters, in the air, and under the seas. If, therefore, oil has set the pace of this war, oil must see it through, and the side that can throw the most oil into the fray over the longest sustained period of time will win.
