Abstract
“The Star-Spangled Banner” officially became the United States national anthem in March 1931, but it has a far longer history than that. Its story began in the early morning of September 14, 1814, when Francis Scott Key witnessed the raising of the American flag over Fort McHenry during its bombardment by British naval forces.
