Abstract

In the aftermath of World War II, the United States and Soviet Union both looked to extend their spheres of influence abroad. As these two countries competed for global influence, Latin America became a particularly volatile battleground. For the United States, the growth of leftist politics in Latin America represented an economic and political threat in a region that it had viewed as part of its sphere of influence since the establishment of the Monroe Doctrine in 1823. For the Soviet Union, Latin America represented an opportunity to extend its sphere of influence into the “backyard” of the United States.
