Leonora O’Reilly, nicknamed “the agitator,” was a significant leader in the labor and women’s suffrage movements of the early twentieth century. Born in New York City in 1870 to Irish immigrant parents, she started working in a shirt factory at age eleven and experienced firsthand the hardship of poverty and the many challenges working-class families faced. Throughout her teen years, she became especially focused on the exploitation of working women and children.
