Saint Patrick served as a model of Christian life. His Confession differs from later penitentials that dominated much of Christianity and originated in Ireland in the sixth century. These manuals served as an example of how one should perform confession. For Saint Patrick, his confession was not one of severe penance, which characterized the later penitentials, but was meant to give thanks for his place in the world. He does mention his personal failings but largely focuses on God’s mercy.
