Abstract
In 1829, the North Carolina Supreme Court in State v. Mann ruled that slave owners had absolute power over the people they enslaved. Judge Thomas Carter Ruffin, who authored the opinion, emboldened slave owners in the South but also demonstrated the immorality of the institution of slavery. The total physical power allotted to the slave owner became a flashpoint for the abolitionist movement, who decried the decision and the system it was based upon.
