The Kitab al-jilwah, translated as the “Book of Revelation” or “Book of Divine Effulgence,” is one of two alleged sacred books of the Yezidi, the other being the Meshaf resh, or “Black Book.” The Yezidi are a religious and ethnic group native to the Kurdish areas of northern Iraq, eastern Turkey, and Transcaucasia (between the southern Black and Caspian seas), with increasing numbers in Europe and the United States. Although its adherents believe themselves to be the oldest group of monotheists, scholars trace Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Gnostic, Zoroastrian, and other influences in their religion. They have often been described as devil worshippers, a misleading claim that has led to violent persecutions.
