Abstract

Mary Baker Eddy's Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures defines the core principles and healing practices of one of America's most distinctive indigenous religions: Christian Science. Believing that she had rediscovered the spiritual powers utilized by Jesus Christ—the prayers that multiplied loaves and fishes, healed the blind and lame, and raised Lazarus from the dead—Eddy characterized her discovery as “divine Science,” which she held to be the “Comforter” promised in the New Testament by John. She argued that the material world is an illusion and that all injuries, illnesses, or disasters suffered by humanity can be “scientifically” healed through an understanding of the principles of “divine Science.”
