Abstract

The submarine campaign interfered with the coastwise movement of coal also. Ordinarily coal from the southern Appalachian fields destined for New England moves by rail to the ports at Hampton Roads, Virginia, and is carried thence by ocean. Between the third quarter of 1941 and the third quarter of 1942, the tonnage of coal terminated in Virginia by the railroads fell 45 per cent.
