Abstract

Sonia Sotomayor, an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court since 2009, was born in New York City in 1954. Her father passed away when she was nine years old, and her mother worked so that Sonia could attend a private Catholic school. Sotomayor graduated as valedictorian of her high school class in 1972. She earned a scholarship that allowed her to attend Princeton University, where she obtained her B.A. in 1976, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Sotomayor graduated from Yale Law School in 1979 and served as editor of the Yale Law Journal.
