Abstract

The dawn of the twenty-first century heralded a change in how the queer community existed in the United States. While earlier movements focused on legalizing queerness, new movements developed to address the variety of lived experiences among members of the LGBTQ+ community. New voices came to the forefront, illuminating the diversity of queerness that earlier movements had overlooked or elided. Overall, the story of the LGBTQ+ community in the twenty-first century is that of claiming first-class citizenship, through legal, social, judicial, and cultural means.
