The political cartoon “Every Dog (No Distinction of His Color) Has His Day” by noted artist Thomas Nast (1840–1902) was published in Harpers Weekly in 1879. Nast is perhaps the best-known cartoonist of nineteenth-century America. His designs, such as his depiction of Santa Claus and his use of the elephant to represent the Republican Party, continue to influence the way these symbols are drawn today.
