Abstract

The story the United States tells about itself constitutes a national mythology: a founding story passed from generation to generation in which certain significant elements of the national character are preserved. American histories tell stories about who Americans are and what our ideas and aspirations mean. The history of the West is mythologized as much as any part of American history—perhaps more than most.
