Abstract

This drawing by Sir William Dolben is of a slave ship Brookes. In 1788, Dolben inspected the ship in London Harbor. Totally shocked at the terrible conditions in which slaves were being held and transported, he became an ardentabolitionist and collaborated with Thomas Clarkson to publish a visual depiction based on his findings during the inspection.
