Abstract

In 1834, English actress Frances Anne “Fanny” Kemble married Pierce Mease Butler, the heir to an extensive system of Southern plantations owned by his grandfather and namesake, Pierce Butler, who had been a member of the 1787 convention that produced the U.S. Constitution. In 1838, the couple traveled with their daughters to live on his family plantation on Butler Island, off the coast of Georgia.
