Rabbi David Einhorn dismantles a sermon, also published in 1861 as a pamphlet, by Rabbi Morris J. Raphall titled “Bible View of Slavery.” In the sermon/pamphlet, Rabbi Raphall argues that various biblical passages justify slavery as an institution ordained by God. Einhorn closely examines Raphall’s views, countering them with alternative interpretations and translations of the relevant biblical texts. What emerges from his response is a powerful denunciation of slavery from the perspective of at least one American Jew.
