On December 18, 2019, the U.S. House of Representatives approved two Articles of Impeachment against Republican president Donald J. Trump. The articles, charging the president with abuse of power and obstruction of justice, both resulted from allegations that the president had unlawfully used his power in soliciting authorities in Ukraine to influence the 2020 presidential election and that he obstructed justice by refusing to cooperate with the House in its investigation of the matter. The vote in the House was 230–197 on the first count (abuse of power) and 229–198 on the second (obstruction of justice). On January 15, 2020, the House of Representatives voted to refer the impeachment articles to the U.S. Senate for trial.
