Many colonial residents held in bondage hoped that the Revolutionary War would result in the abolition of slavery. However, as the war dragged on, little action was taken to end slavery. The British did free enslaved people who escaped to join the Royal army or navy to fight against the Americans. In addition, the American army sometimes freed the enslaved if their owners supported the British, and some enslaved people were freed at the end of the war.
