Abstract

George Mason (1725–1792) was one of the largest landowners and slaveholders in colonial Virginia. He is remembered in his native state for his role in creating a constitution and bill of rights for Virginia. On a national level he was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, but he is best remembered for his refusal to sign the Constitution because of its lack of protection for individuals.
