Art and architecture underwent a fundamental change from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The medieval era was an immensely creative time, with the creation of new forms of art such as illuminated manuscripts and Gothic architecture. The Renaissance saw in the artistic field, as in other creative realms, a return to classical antiquity, which led to dramatic breaks with the immediate medieval past. This return to antiquity was accompanied by new ideas.
