Abstract

Chief Joseph (1840–1904) led the Niimiipuu, a tribe called the Nez Perce by the French and English, as they fought to hold onto their land in the face of pressure from white settlers and the U.S. government, who sought to dispossess them of their homeland and put them on a reservation.
