Abstract

Don Pedro Jaramillo (c. 1829–1907), also known as Don Pedrito, crossed the border from Mexico into Texas during the early 1880s. He lived in the South Texas borderlands region—near present-day Falfurrias, about seventy miles north of the border between the United States and Mexico—until his death in 1907. This region was filled with people of Mexican descent, including recent immigrants like Jaramillo and many Mexican American citizens who had lived in this region their whole lives, since before the U.S. War with Mexico (1846–48), when the region was part of Mexico.
