Abstract

The advertisement reproduced here was published in the Virginia Gazette, the first newspaper in Virginia, founded in 1736 in Williamsburg. The Gazette was the official newspaper of the colony of Virginia, in which official records and other government information appeared. It was published in the colonial capital of Williamsburg from its founding until 1780, when the capital shifted to Richmond. At that point, the Gazette itself moved to Richmond, and it continued to be published until the following year.
