Abstract

Venture Smith’s account provides a window into colonial slavery in Connecticut, which included trade not only with England but also the West Indies and West Africa, and into slavery in the context of the Revolutionary War, when colonists argued for their liberty while holding slaves. His narrative provides insight into how the enslaved population, too, fought for liberty for all.
