Abstract

James Stirling, a British industrialist and writer, toured the United States in 1857. His work Letters from the Slave States gathers a series of letters based on his observations of and interviews with slave owners and the people they enslaved. In it, Stirling presents a critical view of Southern states, their people, and slavery.
