Abstract

In this excerpt from chapter one of Slavery: Its Origin, Nature, and History, Considered in the Light of Bible Teachings, Stringfellow adopts a question- andanswer format to respond to questions that an abolitionist might ask about slavery and how it can be justified. In common with many of slavery’s antebellum apologists, Stringfellow turns to the Bible to buttress most of his arguments. He also examines slavery in the context of the authority of the family.
