Abstract

The colonial revolt against British rule that began in North America in 1776 was fought not only for independence but also for the attainment of certain political ideas and ideals. The American Revolution was fought at a time when monarchies were being challenged, with democracy, the rule of law, and natural rights emerging as alternatives to hereditary government ruled by kings and queens. The Revolution came early in this historical transition, such that the framers of the new government had to make trailblazing efforts to translate democratic ideas into practical use.
