Abstract

Published in August 1989 at the end of the presidency of Ronald Reagan, during which no civil rights legislation for LGBT individuals was approved and the AIDS crisis was largely ignored, Andrew Sullivan’s article “Here Come the Groom: A (Conservative) Case for Gay Marriage” introduced the topic of legalizing gay marriage within American political and social debates. It was the first time that Americans read an article in support of same-sex marriage in a mainstream magazine with a wide circulation. The New Republic published the piece and also gave it unprecedented visibility by devoting its cover to the article, featuring a wedding cake with two grooms on it. The magazine would go on supporting the case for the legalization of gay marriage until the June 2015 Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges that the Fourteenth Amendment of the American Constitution demands that states certify same-sex marriage in addition to heterosexual marriage.
