Women played important, although often overlooked, roles in the American Revolution. They helped keep the economy going as men left farms and jobs to fight the British. They also raised funds and supplies for the Continental army. Some tended the wounded; others cooked or cleaned for the soldiers. Women also formed a number of patriotic groups to support independence. In 1765, almost a decade before the Revolutionary War, women formed the Daughters of Liberty in response to oppressive British laws. Led by prominent women such as Martha Washington, the wife of future Revolutionary general George Washington, the group advocated a boycott of British goods.
