Abstract

In this letter to Higbald, the bishop of Lindisfarne in Northumbria, Alcuin responds to a letter from Higbald describing atrocities committed by Viking raiders. The purpose of the letter is to offer condolences, to urge the Christians of Lindisfarne to remain strong, and to suggest that the raid is a form of divine punishment for failings such as drunkenness and vanity.
