This response by Vishal Mangalwadi, dated June 28, 1995, and published originally in his book Missionary Conspiracy: Letters to a Postmodern Hindu (1995), is addressed to Arun Shourie, a leading Indian intellectual and politician, and attempts to refute Shourie’s case against Christian missions. Mangalwadi draws on a wide range of philosophical and religious concepts to argue in what purport to be letters that Christian missions in India were not a tool of colonialism. Rather, they constituted an effort to reform colonial rule and contribute to India’s spiritual welfare. Mangalwadi’s book examines why modern secular Hindus are returning to Hinduism and argues that their spiritual needs are best met through the Wesleyan biblical faith that created a modern and free India.
