Abstract

This essay was written by the English historian of culture Christopher Dawson, one of the great Christian historians of the twentieth century. He wrote it for a collection of essays that emerged from the 1937 Oxford Conference on Church, Community, and State that brought together major Christian thinkers from many countries and denominations to think through problems and opportunities presented by political modernity.
