Abstract

The Spiritual Exercises comprise four weeks of daily meditations on conscience, sin, election, and the life, ministry, and passion of Christ. These meditations, to be taken under the supervision of a spiritual director, help participants purge themselves of sin, grow spiritually, and combat the wiles of the devil. For Ignatius, the battle between God and the devil is an interior struggle for the soul of the believer. This focus on a spirituality of interiority places Ignatius strongly in the Spanish mystical tradition of Teresa of Ávila and John of the Cross.
