Ban Zhao (45 CE–c. 116 CE), the daughter of one famous Chinese historian (Ban Biao) and the sister of another (Ban Gu), was the first known female Chinese historian. During the Han Dynasty, she wrote Lessons for a Woman, ostensibly to outline for her own daughters the position and duties of women in society. Lessons for a Woman would become a standard educational text in China for many centuries.
