Abstract

The Shijing, or Classic of Poetry, is one of the Five Classics of ancient Chinese literature. According to tradition, most of the 305 poems of this book, also known as the Book of Odes, were composed during the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046–771 BC) and were compiled and edited into their canonical form by Confucius (551–479 BC). The Shijing achieved its status as a “classic” text (along with Classic of Changes, the Classic of Rites, the Classic of History, and the Spring and Autumn Annals) when Confucianism was adopted as an imperial state orthodoxy during the Han Dynasty (202 BCE–220 CE).
