White House audiotape recordings implicated President Richard Nixon, a Republican, regarding a 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. The event itself was dubbed “Watergate” (and many scandals since have been given the ending “gate” as an homage to the original event). Five perpetrators of the break-in were caught stealing documents and installing wiretaps. President Nixon was implicated when an apparent cover-up called into question whether the most powerful office in the United States was abusing power and obstructing justice. Upon review of the evidence against Nixon, the House Judiciary Committee recommended articles of impeachment, leading to Nixon’s preemptive resignation.
