Following his loss in the November 3, 2020, election, incumbent President Donald J. Trump, a Republican, rejected the results and claimed that the election was stolen by his Democratic challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden. Speaking before a crowd of supporters at a rally on January 6, 2021, the day that Congress was required to certify the results of the elections, Trump repeated assertions that there was widespread voting fraud and that the results of the election were invalid. The outgoing president then encouraged his followers to march to the Capitol Building (the home of Congress) and protest the results.
