Abstract

The “Crisis of Confidence” speech, delivered by President Jimmy Carter on July 15, 1979, was a televised address from the White House in which the president attempted to speak candidly about the nation’s economic and energy crises. The speech was given against the backdrop of high inflation, rising unemployment, and the ongoing energy crisis. Carter called for a renewal of the American spirit and a commitment to shared values and national unity to overcome the aforementioned obstacles.
