For more than half a century Billy Graham was America’s most wellknown evangelist and a preacher who never failed to engage and embrace all manner of political, social, and polemic issues. The magic of Graham’s persona was that after beginning his career as a youthful and flamboyant regional conversion minister, he very quickly translated his message into an extraordinary outreach that made him a compelling world figure. He was a prolific writer and could easily and quickly turn out and deliver a dynamic sermon. In his written work, Graham shows himself to be a man of vision who relished crafting a Christian battle cry from his readings of the Bible from the middle of the twentieth century into the twenty- first, powerfully addressing major American and global events. It was the combination of Graham’s close reading of the Bible and a passionate belief in his own ability to communicate with people that shaped him as an iconic figure. In “The Coming Storm,” his preface to his book Till Armageddon: A Perspective on Suffering, Graham looks at national ills and global stresses and predicts continued violence of biblical proportions.
