Abstract

Chief Joseph (1840–1904), also called Young Joseph, of the Wallowa band of the Nez Percé tribe led his people with dignity and honor as they tried to hold on to their land in the face of pressure from white settlers and the U.S. government to dispossess them of their homeland and put them on a reservation.
