The colony of Pennsylvania had its origins in a debt owed by King James II of England (1633–1701) to Admiral William Penn (1621–1670). Penn had begun his naval career in the Parliamentary navy that opposed Charles II (1630–1685) and his younger brother James during the English Civil War (1642–51). Years later, however, Penn was part of the Restoration of Charles II, and in the process he became a supporter of James Duke of York, soon to be Lord High Admiral of England. Under James, Penn's career soared.
