John Winthrop was a prominent leader of one of the first Puritan settlements in the New World. As he ventured to the Americas in 1630 aboard the Arbella, he wrote his guidelines, “A Model of Christian Charity,” for the community he and his fellow colonists hoped to establish along New England's shores. The purpose of his sermon was to illustrate how important it was that the Puritans treat each other with love and respect because that was the only way their community was going to survive.
