Born in 1510 in the Basque country, Lope de Aguirre was a Spanish soldier and conquistador active in South America during the reign of Phillip II. Aguirre is best known in contemporary culture and colonial historiography for his final, ill-fated expedition down the Amazon in search of the mythical golden Kingdom El Dorado.
