From 1689 to 1763 the colonies in the Americas—ranging from the southern tip of South America to the shores of Hudson's Bay—were part of a series of imperial wars between different European powers. In most of these wars, the American colonists were only part (and not a very large part) of a much wider struggle for power, one that took place on a global scale. These wars turned the American colonies into battlegrounds of imperial ambition.
