Abstract

In 1767 a broadside in Boston displayed an image of a man on a pillory along with “A few Lines on Magnus Mode, Richard Hodges & J. Newington Clark. Who are Sentenc'd to stand one Hour in the Pillory at Charleston.” The subheading is telling as it describes what the men are charged with as well as their punishments: “To have one of their EARS cut off, and to be Whipped 20 Stripes at the public Whipping-Post, for making and passing Counterfeit DOLLARS, &c.” Following in the genre of crime poetry, the image of the pillory is accompanied by forty-four lines of poetic verse.
