Abstract

This journal, written by Captain Simeon Ecuyer, the commandant of Fort Pitt, tells the day in and day out of being a soldier during the French and Indian War (1754–63). Ecuyer's journal details events that took place during Pontiac's Rebellion in 1763 and the interaction between British soldiers and Native Americans. Captain Ecuyer was the British officer in charge of the fort at the time. Fort Pitt was in British control during this period, but the French had controlled the fort (under the name Fort Duquesne) at the beginning of the conflict. As a result, there were tensions concerning the strategic spot that Fort Pitt held.
