Abstract

When Europeans reached Peru in the sixteenth century, they encountered one of the most sophisticated and highly developed civilizations in the Americas: the Inca Empire. The Inca, who had ruled Peru since the thirteenth century, were a centralized, hereditary, aristocratic monarchy whose empire controlled immense wealth, primarily through their control of gold and silver mines in the Andes. This gold and silver attracted the attention of Spanish soldiers and explorers during the sixteenth century.
