Abstract

The Letter of Edward Winslow to a Friend, dated December 11, 1621, was published as part of a 1622 book, A Relation or Journal of the Beginning and Proceedings of the English Plantation Settled at Plimoth in New England, written primarily by Winslow, though part of it was probably written by William Bradford, the second governor of Plymouth Colony. The book is generally referred to as Mourt's Relation, named for its publisher, George Morton, who was sometimes called George Mourt. Winslow's letter provides a portrait of the life of the Plymouth Colony pilgrims, including a description of relations with Native Americans. It thus provides an account of what amounts to the first Thanksgiving in the New World.
